Sundowner river cruise Zambezi River, Zambia

Back to Zambia for buffet lunch, a little relaxation around resort, and sundowner river cruise.

Almost vegetarian!

Our boat

Heading out

View along the way

Crocodile...somewhere

I still didn't see it

Sun starting to set

Cape Buffalo coming for a drink

Hippos...closer

Dinner...wings from the braai...and...

A show. Marimba band in the dark and no one clapped. No one paid attention at all. Odd.

Tomorrow, off to Chobe!

Kissing the ground and waiting for the cross border transfer

Safely back to Earth! Lots of video but will go through and edit. I ended up going with a couple from Poland. I was the lightest 🀣🀣...met the weigh limit including my overloaded purse...so ended up in front. Freaky! But amazing view of falls. They aren't full power this time of year. And Elephants, hippos, and Water Buffalo. I will look through the videos later and post. Now sitting in a cafe in Vic Falls, Zimbabwe waiting for my driver to take me to border patrol. Then meet other driver to take me back across the bridge and Zambia border patrol. That takes about 40 minutes...then nap before sunset cruise. And another shower?

Waiting for driver to take me to border crossing. Only place to get wifi was Three Monkeys Restaurant. So purchased a ginger ale so I could sit and attempt to find driver. Went outside and bunch of taxi drivers approached with their low ball offers. Said I had a ride. Had to go back into restaurant to get away from them. Went back out and one of the older drivers came over to offer to call the guy for me. I think he told rest to leave me alone. So a bit of a glitch but made it back with only pissing off 2 people.

Just in case you forgot...

Take off! Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Ok here we go...Victoria Falls via helicopter...enjoy! Oh you might want to mute...the rotor is very loud. If you can spot the elephants, hippos, and/or water Buffalo I'll buy you your beverage of choice. I DID see them but they blend into scenery on vids.

Fueling up

On the way to a tour of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe

Pick up at hotel and views of the area on the way to helicopter landing zone.

Crossing Zambezi into Zimbabwe

Still another 30 minutes before I get to go up. Some hubbub in the 2 groups ahead of me. They paid for 5 and said 6 going. Then it's only 5. But they HAVE TO get up right away because they are making "content".πŸ™„ I told them I'll wait because I'm just a tourist and Noone cares about my content. Then find out they are only going on the 15 min flight...so either way I will be in my own helicopter for my 25 min flight. 😁

Hotel views while contemplating my life choices

So some of you know I'm a little crazy...sitting here enjoying the peace after a buffet breakfast and waiting for my transfer to Zim for my first Vic Falls adventure via HELICOPTER! My heart is all in. My brain is saying WTF did you just do! I forgot to pack diapers!🀣🀣 Anyway, start off with a taste of this absolutely beautiful hotel and the great Zambezi River. Enjoy

I'm not so crazy. Ultralites have been buzzing the hotel all morning!

Early morning in Zambia

Sunrise on Monday. Sleeping was OK. Too hot. Will see if I can get a fan or buy one somewhere. Have the sound on with video to hear the birds and bugs. Thought I might get lucky and see elephants coming around for breakfast. I can hear something walking in the distance. So for now, all I encounter are mosquitos. My first spray down of this natural repellent. We'll see how that works before going to the Big guns...DEET. It is absolutely still...so needed this zen moment after my near meltdown last night!

Oh and lesson #1...turn off lights when going on the balcony! About 2000 of my new best friend followed me in. Peaceful Sleep to the rescue! An aromatic spray that smells like air freshener. As long as it works! I'm on day 12 of Malaria pills so should be doped up enough to kill anything that bites me...well, may not a lion🀷‍♀️

Arrive in Livingstone, Zambia

Hello from Livingstone, Zambia. Wowser...what a change. Yep, it's hot but not too bad. Driver Keedy gave me the basics on the 29 minute drive from airport. We were driving slowly in case of elephants. I thought he was messing with the American until...no, no elephants but I did see remnants of their breakfast on the road and an Elephant crossing sign. The room is beautiful and comes with mosquito net and Peaceful Sleep insect repellent...does it put them to sleep or help me sleep? I'll let you know if I need it.😁

Driving through Livingstone to get from airport to hotel

My room for the next week

Strong stuff

One of the outdoor seating areas. The resort is huge and located on bank of Zambezi River inside the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Evidence of elephants all over but hotel has special fencing to keep them out as as well as fencing at the riverbank to prevent crocodiles from climbing up. Never stayed anywhere with beware of crocs signs!

Every meal is buffet and each night is different ethnicity. I don't remember which this is but it was good. Love the couscous, bean, corn salad. Everything fresh off the farm!

Meeting Lynette at Oranjezicht Market

Wow! When the weather changes here it gets wild. I took a nap and woke up to howling wind and rain pounding on the windows....but why aren't the palm trees moving? Some magical force?🀷‍♀️😁

Had a lovely meet-up with an online friend from a travel FB group at the Oranjezicht Market just down the street from my hotel. It is a chilly, windy, rainy day but Lynette came with a big smile and we enjoyed a hot beverage while discussing our travels, life in our cities, and even a little politics. Things aren't so different here.🀷‍♀️

We walked around to find all sorts of homemade goodies, the braai guy, Korean street food along side handicrafts, hand made clothing, baskets, fresh flowers, and beautiful fresh organic veggies. You can get pretty much anything you need!

As Lynette and I sipped and chatted I noticed someone next to me, look up and it Natasha and Elize! They decided to stop by on their way to pick someone up at the airport. They so sweetly had a mug made for me. Yes, if you just put money down on whether or not I teared up...you won! Happy tears. You know me well, my friends😁

I'm about 95% packed. Natasha's big orange suitcase is full. So I can't buy anything else...yeah, right...there's still space. So came here with 1 checked bag, 2 carryon. Leaving with 2 checked bags and 1 carryon.

Enjoy some of the final pics of Cape Town!

Lynette and the prehistoric flowers that are now my faves!

A little KFC anyone?? Korean Fried Chicken

Grilled sausages of all types

Flowers everywhere

Fresh produce and HORDES of people!

And my mug from Elize and Natasha! What a great way to remember them and Cape Town!

A Lazy Day in Cape Town, South Africa

Ok...most of souvenir list accomplished. Of course stopped for an iced latte and a vanilla creme cronut....WHAT? Cronuts made it to Cape Town...and didn't have wait in a 2 hour line to get one. Very tasty...only quirk...lemon not vanilla🀣🀣 but still so good.

Searching high and low for Loxtonia Stonefruit cider. Hit up the Pick n Pay, Woolworth, and finally Checkers. Checkers is a very nice grocery store with lots of fresh food, hot buffet, and wine cellar....but no other liquor. Asked the clerk. She had no idea what I was asking. A woman in line next to me pointed me in right direction to the Checkers liquor store. Ah I see. Still had to dig for it in a walk in fridge and asked 2 workers. They looked high and low...on the very top shelf! YEA I have bubblewrap and zip lock bags to wrap the bottles since they have a few airplane rides until home. 😁

Back to hotel for packing and wandering. Then, pizza! I've been thinking about it for days.

Cronut! It was very good but weighed about 5 lbs!

One of the top 3 rated in Cape Town. Pizza Shed

I got the pepperoni with hot honey on the side. It was very good. Best of all of the pizza I had on the trip.

Day out and about with Elize to see markets, penguins, and a souvenir I will have forever.

Oh my I have no idea where to start! Today Elize picked me up and we headed back to Boulder Beach to see penguins. Along the way we stopped at the Old Biscuit Mill. As the name says...old mill turned into a market of handcrafted goods and a couple cafes. Got a cappuccino to start the day!

Then we stopped by this huge beautiful memorial to British administrator Cecil Rhodes. He had quite an influence over the region and was the namesake of Rhodesia now Zimbabwe. There is a huge botanical garden and many other parts of the city that he owned. Since he had no children he donated it to the city.

Next, Simon's Town which has a naval base and a statue of a dog that the navy adopted as a mascot. His name was Nuisance and I have promised Elize that I will google him for the whole story before I go to sleep.😁

Wound our way around to a good place to stroll to penguins at Boulders Beach!! Saw a few along the path resting in the shade and one was on an egg...so 4.5 penguins!

Then a very windy, narrow, no guardrail road to a place called Smitswinkel. Elize was braver than I and stepped to the edge of the cliff to get a Pic of 3 houses all the way down on the beach. Electric comes from solar, water from who knows where, and there is an area off the road by the sign for their cars. I would hate grocery day!

Had a stop at Kalky's at Kalk Bay for fresh off the boat snoek fish. It is a mild white fish with long bones. It was grilled and I enjoyed it with a Chilli dip.

Next, a stroll through the lovely Company Park (told you about the origins earlier) near the Observatory. Huge fig trees, squirrels that will eat peanuts out of your hand, Egyptian geese-beautiful, cafe, and good old Cecil Rhodes!!

Last stop was completely unplanned but came up in our conversation a couple of times...so off we went to get my favorite souvenir of Cape Town 😁 Guesses?

Now I'm exhausted and I have assigned research project. And BONUS I have made 2 new friends!! Thanks again to Natasha and Elize for such a wonderful time around the city and region!

On the way with Elize to the Old Biscuit Mill. Another old company turned into arts market, cafe, restaurant. It is the grey building ahead and the yellow building with an external elevator on the right.

Old Biscuit Mill

Start the day right with a pretty latte!

Memorial to Cecil Rhodes - former Prime Minister to the Cape Colony, mining magnate, Creator of the Rhode's scholarship.  He had no children so donated all of this land and wealth to the Cape Colony. He is buried in Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) which was his favorite place. All of this history and generosity aside there are, of course MANY controversies - too numerous to mention!

View from Rhodes Memorial

I changed my number

The paper mache house called Yokohama in Muizenberg was built in 1906 from paper imported from Japan.

This is the little market that has the statue of Nuisance the dog.

And, of course, I had to have my picture taken with him...thanks to Elize. 😁

At Boulders Beach walking one of the paths to look for penguins!

Not yet...but sure is a pretty view

Off in the distance...

There they are.

And along the path...

This area is perfect for nesting. It is Spring here, after all!

Damn finger! Oh well, you can still see the little guy, sorta

Is that an egg?

It is!

And a dassie close up from Elize

The sign for Smitswinkel in the parking area for the secluded little village down on the beach. No electricity, running water, etc. There is a path from the road or they can access via the ocean. I was too chicken to even get out of the vehicle!

But Elize is very brave and got a pic for me! πŸ˜‚

On the Kalk's Bay to visit the famous Kalky's. It is right on the dock and they get their fish FRESH! Go up to the window to order what fish, how you want it cooked, sauce, bread. Cash only. Then to a communal table and wait for your name to be called. I was doing just that while Elize went out and took pics.

Grilled Snoek with chilli sauce. It was tasty!

Back to Cape Town proper and a walk through the Company Park.  Egyptian geese.

And cool trees

It is a place for an after work stroll, lunch time picnic, playing with the kids, resting on a bench. Very peaceful even though in the middle of huge city.

And, of course, a statue of Cecil Rhodes. Yes, he is very controversial. But this is South Africa. It wasn't that long ago that apartheid was the law of the land....only 30 years. The scars of those decades are deep and still evident. Is life better? Maybe some.

An unplanned sightseeing at Canal Walk Mall. It is HUGE. The biggest mall in South Africa. Oh yeah and they have a Cinnabon!

This place looks interesting...

My forever souvenir in progress...

Done!

Back to the hotel and sleep!

Home with a boatload of souvenirs
